Art gives a child a voice

Ten-year-old Yolanda rarely spoke more than a few words. Her family was large and she was overshadowed by older siblings.  School was especially difficult; she spent most of her time alone on the playground.  Regardless of the encouragement she received from teachers, Yolanda kept to herself.  Her mother was concerned and brought Yolanda to Amanecer, where she entered the CityScape art therapy program.

Yolanda cautiously approached CityScape’s many art-focused activities. She participated but always without speaking. One day, Yolanda’s therapist gave her a piece of cardboard and a box full of craft items. Yolanda was asked to make a face with the materials. As she finished, Yolanda looked up at her therapist and asked if there might be yarn to use for hair.  Yarn was quickly located and, smiling, Yolanda finished her face.  Her therapist was also smiling: this was the first time Yolanda had ever asked for anything.
