Cause & Effect: Mental Health Issues Linked to Domestic Violence

The link between domestic violence and mental health issues is real and impacts both abusers and victims, according to a landmark study out of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Women in abusive relationships tend to suffer from mental health issues like anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder; while abusers often struggle with depression, substance abuse, and obsessive and possessive behavior.

Mental health experts are gaining greater insight into the dynamics of domestic violence and mental health, including identifying risk factors that are associated with abusive behaviors and which may help victims break the cycle of violence. This breakthrough could prove life-saving in Arizona where no change has occurred in the record number of women killed there each year by domestic violence.
