Joey and His Mother Edessa

Joey and Edessa Success StoryJoey’s mother, Edessa, was overwhelmed with the need to constantly monitor her son.  She could not figure out why her son was not able to complete simple tasks as dressing himself.  Friends were asking her why Joey was behaving strangely.  He did not mingle with anyone and was unable to focus on anything.  They only thing he was not distracted from was reading.

With the help of an elementary school counselor, Joey was diagnosed in the 4th grade with ADHD and mild autism.  Since the family did not have the financial resources to get Joey help, he was referred to Amanecer and went to weekly therapy sessions.  He also joined CityScape at Amanecer, an art therapy program.

Joey immediately bonded with Rudy, a CityScape supervisor, and came to see him as a father figure.  He learned how to make friends and interact with other children.  The art projects were a favorite of Joey’s and taught him to stay focus and complete the task.  Joey’s mother, Edessa, smiles now when she talks about her son and is grateful for everything Amanecer did to make a difference in Joey’s life.

(Permission from both Edessa and Joey was given to tell their story.)
