National Demographics Trends Visible at Amanecer

Amanecer’s cultural competency has never been more important. With a clinical and professional staff that is 80% bilingual/bicultural, the agency is well-positioned to provide quality care for Spanish-speaking clients. Approximately half of the agency’s culturally competent programs are dedicated to Children’s Services – a reflection of the growing demand for services from new immigrant families and children.  Recent statistics from The Urban Institute revealed the following:

• 26% of children 0-8 with immigrant parents live in California. This is twice the state’s share of all children in the United States (13%) and three times its share of children with native-born parents (8%).
• Half of all young children in California are children of immigrants.
• More than one in five children in the United States has at least one immigrant parent.
• More than half of children of immigrants are Hispanic.
• Young children are more likely to have immigrant parents than older children – in 2008, 25% of children age 0–2 have immigrant parents.
• Children of immigrants are disproportionately poor or low-income—about half live in low-income households vs. 37% of children of natives.
• The vast majority (93%) of children of immigrants are U.S. citizens.
