Amanecer Responds to Obama’s Executive Order Impacting Undocumented Families

Immigration ReformPresident Obama’s executive order provides a legal reprieve to the undocumented parents of U.S. citizens and permanent residents who have resided in the country for at least five years. For the thousands of children born in the U.S. to undocumented parents who live with the constant threat of deportation, the news is a welcome relief.

“Amanecer is on the front lines every day with children and families threatened by deportation,” states Executive Director Tim Ryder. “The fear of being separated from their parents is not unfounded; many have experienced the trauma of witnessing a parent’s arrest.”

Children separated from their parents under such traumatic circumstances are at high risk for post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and nightmares. Behavioral problems often occur in the wake of their grief and confusion. Without care, the children can fall victim to violence, incarceration and hospitalization.

The financial burden on a family that loses a breadwinner due to deportation can be devastating. Family members, including children and teens, are forced to work instead of going to school. Many families risk eviction because they can no longer pay rent.

Amanecer provides intensive counseling, therapy and intervention services for the low-income children, teens, families and adults living in downtown Los Angeles. Our culturally competent staff breaks barriers to access every day by working with Latino clients in a way that respects tradition and heritage, builds trust, and encourages growth, learning, and progress toward a better life.
