Unaccompanied Migrant Children from Central America

This year alone, over 3,500 Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC) have arrived in Los Angeles County after fleeing their gang/violence-ridden Central American home countries and enduring brutal journeys to U.S. during which many suffered sexual/physical abuse and exploitation from the criminals who transported them.

Seeking asylum, UMC must communicate their ordeals to attorneys and immigration court. Severely traumatized by their horrific experiences, they are unable to do so. Amanecer provides intensive, trauma-focused therapy/case management at partner legal clinics to help these children recover from their traumatic experiences, communicate with their attorneys, and acquire critical skills to adapt to their uncertain futures.

Amanecer was one of the first agencies in Los Angeles to respond to the surge of children crossing the border that started in 2012.
