Who We Serve

Children, Families, and Adults

Amanecer Client Demographics

The children, families and adults Amanecer serves live in neighborhoods throughout Central and Downtown Los Angeles, including Pico-Union, South Central, Hollywood, Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Lincoln Heights, Boyle Heights, Los Feliz and Koreatown.

Many are monolingual Spanish-speaking, ranging in age from toddlers to teens in children’s programs, and from emancipating youth to seniors in adult programs. In addition to mental illness and behavioral disorders, our clients are challenged by poverty, immigration issues, domestic violence, substance abuse, lack of education and employment opportunities, and language barriers.

Their Struggle to Survive

Amanecer also serves a rapidly growing number of new immigrants. Their stressful lives are compounded by mental health issues — particularly post-traumatic stress disorder — and the fear of deportation. Children are exposed to community violence, drugs and gangs. For most of the families, poverty and homelessness are ever-present threats.

Daily survival often means finding work, shelter and food. Many adults and children are employed as day laborers, domestic and factory workers, and street vendors. As the city’s working poor, they contribute to the economy; yet have no access to private insurance, the welfare system, MediCal or other entitlement programs.
